In 2009 the Grand Chapter of The Equestrian, Secular and Chapterial Order of Saint Joachim established The Austro-German Commandery "Leopold II" to better serve its growing membership in German-speaking countries where The Order had its original roots. The Commander of the Commandery Leopold II is H.E. The Chevalier Wolfgang Steinhardt GCJ.

The Commandery "Leopold II" is named after the Holy Roman Emperor and King of Hungary who named a Knight of the Order of Saint Joachim as his Chancellor and extended recognition of our Order throughout the Empire by Imperial decree. Leopold II was the third son of Maria Theresa and emperor Francis Stephen of Lotharingia. His enlightened rule earned him the informal titles of "the duke of peace“, "the king of shepherds“ and "Leopold the Wise“.

Born in Vienna, H.E. The Chevalier Steinhardt GCJ has had a long career in sales and management of such companies as 3M, Afga and Kontron La-Roche. He was CEO of Elscint Medical Technology and founder of Westwind Air. The Chevalier Steinhardt KCJ served as Commercial Counsellor to the Dominican Republic in Austria, and for five years lived in the Dominican Republic as head of the branch office, for which he was appointed “Senator h.c.” As a youth, for four years H.E. The Chevalier Steinhardt was a member of the chorus of the world-famous Vienna Boys Choir – the “Wiener Sängerknaben”.

H.E. The Chevalier Steinhardt GCJ is an accomplished pilot, having logged many hours in both multiengine aircraft and helicopters. He combined his passion for flying with his charitable work, and serves as the Federal Commander of the Corps Saint Lazare International. The CSLI is an independent service organization that undertakes numerous charitable activities in Austria and Germany, as well as internationally. It works with, but is not part of, The Order of St Lazarus. Its “air wing” is actively involved in search and rescue operations, emergency evacuations and giving the handicapped the opportunity to enjoy the freedom of recreational flying. A group of about 40 pilots forms an important part of the members of the CSLI.

H.E. The Chevalier Steinhardt GCJ is the recipient of numerous awards and honours for his extensive charitable work, and can be reached at steinhardt@chello.at.
